Physical Education

We provide a broad and varied PE curriculum relating to games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities.

Our PE curriculum is designed to cover all of the knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. We provide rich and varied learning experiences so that pupils develop competency, skills and knowledge in a broad range of physical activities and are inspired to succeed and excel in competitive sport as well as other physically demanding activities. All pupils learn to become physically confident and consciously healthy in ways that support and inspire their overall health and fitness. All pupils are provided with opportunities to take part in sport and daily physical activities that build character and embed values such as teamwork, fairness and respect.

The teaching of PE at Viridis Schools is categorised in four disciplines: games, dance, gymnastics and athletics.

EYFS

  • Our EYFS follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
  • ‘Physical Development’ involves pupils developing their fine and gross motor skills and children are taught to negotiate space and obstacles safely, move energetically through running, jumping, skipping and climbing, and demonstrate strength, balance and coordination through play.

KS1

  • Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.

KS2

  • Pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills and begin to learn how to use them in different ways and link them to make actions and sequences of movement.
  • Pupils communicate, collaborate, and compete with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports whilst learning how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
  • Local facilities are utilised so that pupils can partake in weekly swimming lessons in a designated year group.

Pupils are offered a wide range of enriching and engaging experiences which are designed to engage as many as our pupils as possible in the widest range of physical activities and sports, inside and outside of school. Our extra-curricular programme offers a wide range of sports activities including ballet, football, boxing, multi skills and taekwondo and local sports clubs and coaches are regularly invited into school to provide specialist coaching to pupils, whilst also encouraging the development of leadership skills.
